The UK Foreign Office funded a Scottish organization that has publicly criticized Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn.
Alan Duncan, Foreign Office Minister, has confirmed the payments to The Institute for Statecraft. The tweets from the organization are also documented.
The Daily Record reported that the Scottish Institute for Statecraft has received over £2million in Foreign Office funds to “counter Russian online propaganda by forming clusters of friendly journalists and key influencers throughout Europe who use social media to hit back against disinformation.”
According to the Daily Record, the organization’s official Twitter account has promoted comments critical of Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn:
One tweet quotes a newspaper article calling Corbyn a “useful idiot”, that goes on to state: “His open visceral anti-Westernism helped the Kremlin cause, as surely as if he had been secretly peddling Westminster tittle-tattle for money.”
A message from the UK Government-funded organisation promotes an article that states: “Unlike Galloway (former MP George Galloway) Corbyn does not scream conspiracy, he implies it,” while another added: “It’s time for the Corbyn left to confront its Putin problem.
- Foreign Office Minister Alan Duncan acknowledged the allegations on BBC Radio 4 and announced that he was ordering an investigation.
